General information
The Ancient Zvenyhorod Historical and Cultural Reserve was established in 2020 in the village of Zvenyhorod, Lviv Oblast. It is located only 20 km from Lviv,
on the site where one of the first three princely capitals in the Ukrainian Carpathian region in medieval times. The first chronicle mention of it dates back to 1086, making it almost 200 years older than Lviv. In the first half of the 12th century it was the capital of the Zvenyhorod principality. It was here that the first white-stone church and palace in western Ukraine were built.
Numerous archaeological finds tell us about Zvenyhorod as a rich and beautiful city where education and the arts were developed. The three oldest written documents of the State Archival Fund of Ukraine - birch bark charters - originate from here. One of them is perfectly preserved and gives us a sample of writing and language of the 12th century.
The city existed until 1241, when it was burned to the ground by the Mongol-Tatars, and since then it has not regained its greatness.
